Niouma Semega, CEO of SemegaChange, led an educational workshop within the National Society of Black Engineers Conference on March 20 in Baltimore, Maryland. The workshop, titled “How to be an Academic Weapon 101,” centered on themes such as becoming successful within the STEM field and maximizing participants’ impacts within that space in the future.
At the end of the session, attendees were able to create their own “Sc-Avatars.” These icons are created “in order to leverage everything they have done and should do that is a force to be reckoned with.” Aspiring STEM professionals can embody their professional and academic goals within their icons to inspire and advance their ambitions throughout the workshop.
“This opportunity at NSBE was so fulfilling on so many levels,” Semega said. “Recognizing that although the organization is for black engineers there are far more males than women. Demonstrating the importance for organizations like SemegaChange to address this STEM gender gap.”
One of the participants said that the event was “really fun” and “the speaker was really interesting, I never got bored.”
Semega said that the attendees will be using the Sc-Avatar workshop at the SC x WIT Stemisphere Summit on July 25th.
