SemegaChange, in collaboration with the Black Girl Pre-Health Collective (BGPC) at George Washington University, launched the SemegaChange DC Hub on April 7th. The installation of the hub is meant to serve as a third space for SemegaChange members in the DMV area. Some of the goals of the hub include increased representation for the organization and its members as well as provide tools and resources for those engaged with the STEM field.
In honor of Women’s History Month, SemegaChange worked with BGCP to host its first event with the hub. Titled “From Congo to our Communities: Tech, Toxins, and Truth,” the discussion shed light on the harmful extraction of cobalt from the Democratic Republic of Congo, including an increase in e-waste and environmental degradation. Moreover, the presentation holistically evaluated the impacts of mineral extraction in the DRC in a global context, including rapid development of technologies that require these materials.
The presentation concluded with a discussion on the future of mineral extraction in the country, how it is fueling the current war in eastern DRC, and what the future of technological development may look like.
The SemegaChange DC Hub event is one of many that aims to connect SemegaChange members from across the region.
Applications are currently open for SemegaChange’s NYC hub, which is expected to launch later this year. Prospective applications can apply here.
